Week One Discussion - The Knitting Club

The Three Tomatoes
We enjoyed this book, a sort of a Steel Magnolias set in New York. We think Julia Roberts is perfect for the part of Georgia, in the movie version that comes out in June.

We give this ** stars. What do you think? It was definitely a light read after A Thousand Spendid suns.

The Three Tomatoes rating system:
No stars. Forget about it.
*Only if you have nothing else to read.
** Enjoyable.
***A must read.

This week's questions:
The role of friendships among women is a central theme. Some friendships develop easily, like K.C.'s and Georgia's, while others begin on unsure footing, like Darwin and Lucie's. Cat's insecurities create conflicitng feelings about drawing Georgia closer. How does emotional baggage and issues of class challenge trust between these various women?

Will you go to see the movie?

Post your opionions below.

Week Five Discussion - A Thousand Splendid Suns

Question: While the first three parts of the novel are written in the past tense, the final part is written in present tense. What do you think was the author’s intent in making this shift? How does it change the effect of this final section?

Week Four Discussion - A Thousand Splendid Suns

Last week, some of you commented on the scene in the hospital. This was one of the most disturbing chapters in the book to us. It was horrifying and almost unimaginable that even the Taliban could have that much disregard for women.
What was the most disturbing part of the book from your perspective ? And sadly there were so many.
